Sandra B. Proulx of Cornish, NH, passed away early Sunday morning, June 4, 2017, surrounded by her family after struggling with diabetes and its complications for many years.
Sandy was born in Fort Monmouth, NJ, January 24, 1953. She lived her early years in Monroe, CT, and moved with her family to Peterborough, NH, in 1968. She graduated from High School in 1971 as a member of the first graduating class of Con Val High School, 1971. She graduated from Keene State College in 1975 with a BS degree in Education. It was at KSC that she met her future husband, Richard M. Proulx while baking chocolate chip cookies with friends at the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity house.
Sandy and Dick were married on June 21, 1975 in Peterborough, NH. They moved to Claremont where she worked as a teacher’s aide at the North St. School until the birth of her son in 1980. In 1978 she and Richard moved into their log cabin on a hill in Cornish, NH, and remained there for the next 39 years. Sandy also worked as a substitute teacher at the Cornish School, and as a math aide at the Plainfield School. In the mid 1990’s she was forced to stop working due to complications with the diabetes. In 1999, she received a kidney transplant that improved her life for the next 18 years.
She was active with her family, attending all of Dan’s sporting and school events, and was a Cub Scout den leader for several years. She loved her Cornish home, working in the yard and flower gardens. The vegetable garden was a source of pride, as was preserving her vegetables for the winter. She was an avid cook and loved to bake deserts even though she could not indulge. Dick and Dan will tell you her whoopee pies were the best around. She was a truly dedicated wife and mother always putting family ahead of herself and we will miss her tremendously.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Richard of Cornish; son, Daniel of Cornish; Dan’s partner, Jen Donovan of Windsor; her parents, John and Violet Banks of Peterborough; brothers, John Banks and wife, Deborah of Westborough, MA, Bradford Banks of Peterborough; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Friday, June 16th from 5 to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Cornish on Saturday morning, 17th at 10 AM with Rev. Dale Nicholas officiating. Burial will follow in Edminster Cemetery.
