Roger W. Conant, 72, of Charlestown, NH, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017, lovingly surrounded by his family following several years of declining health.
He was born on August 15, 1945, in Claremont, NH, to Dave and Aune Conant of Charlestown, NH. Roger graduated from Charlestown High School in 1963. In 1966 he married Carol Aiken. Roger and Carol had three children together, Chris, Amy, and Hilary.
Roger served in the Air Force from 1965-1969 as a radar operator in Thailand and Vietnam, which handled air traffic from Thailand and North Vietnam.
Upon discharge from the Air Force, Roger and family returned to Charlestown where he was employed at Fellows Gear Shaper until 2002. Roger also worked for Sullivan Machine for a few years until working at the VA in White River Junction from 2007 to 2012 in the housekeeping department.
In 1984, Roger married Connie-Dee Murray, of Springfield, VT and her son Matthew Ellison joined the family.
Roger loved spending time with his children as they were growing up, teaching them to love and appreciate the joys of hiking, swimming, fishing, and waterskiing on the river. Nothing pleased him more than having a bunch of kids playing basketball in the yard. He also enjoyed many adventurous trips canoeing and fishing on his beloved Connecticut River with his long-time friend, Elwood Lewis. Roger was also a long-time member of the secret Black and Yellow-Spotted Lizard Society.
Roger was predeceased by his father, Dave Conant.
He is survived by his mother, Aune Conant of Unity, NH; his wife, Connie of Charlestown, NH; son, Christopher Conant of Charlestown, NH; daughters, Amy Conant and husband, Jonathan Casner of Andover, VT, and Hilary Conant of Montpelier, VT; step-son, Matthew and wife, Melissa Ellison of Wakefield, MA; two grandchildren, Olivia and Luke Ellison of Wakefield, MA; one sister, Betsey Clark of Lebanon, ME; brothers, David and wife Minty Conant of Barnard, VT, Brian and wife Irma Conant of Charlestown, NH; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Roger’s life at the Charlestown Memorial Chapel on Thursday June 8th. Calling hours are from 1:00 to 2:00 PM with a service at 2:00 PM. Food and refreshments to follow after the service at the Charlestown VFW on Lovers Lane Road.
