Aurelie Rose Jacques, resident of Claremont, NH, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor VT after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends during her final days and hours. She was born to the late Willie Desmarais and Evelyn (St Clair) Desmarais on August 16, 1938. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1956. She received her B.A from UNH, her M.A from Dartmouth College and her degree in law from Franklin Pierce Law Center. She also studied at the Sorbonne, The University of Paris, The University of Vienna in Austria and The Goethe Institute in Germany. Early in her career Aurelie worked as a case worker for the State of NH. She then taught school for a short time in Newport, NH, before a long career as a highly respected French teacher at Claremont Junior High School where she excelled in the ability to creatively engage and motivate students. After her years as a teacher she practiced law and worked for NH Legal Aid, followed by many years as a dedicated and innovative attorney with VT Legal Aid. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic minister. She was a member of Mensa. She served as a local Girl Scout leader when her daughters were young. She was fluent in five languages, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Travel was passion for Aurelie and she enjoyed many vacations to European countries as well as to the Dominican Republic and Mexico where she donated her services as a volunteer. She was a life-long student and continued to attend colleges well into her 70’s. Family and friends were very important to Aurelie and she played a central role in keeping those close to her connected to each other. She was notable for her insight, wisdom, kindness, keen intellect, clever wit and her love of books and education. Aurelie was the wife of Jean-Guy Jacques, who she married on February 4, 1961. She is survived by her husband, Jean-Guy Jacques, and their five children, Denise Malia and her husband Matthew of Claremont, Cheryl Dow and her husband Greg of W. Lebanon, ME, Daniel Jacques and his wife Rachel of Tamworth, Catherine Hoch of Freehold, NJ, and David Jacques and his wife Andrea of Claremont; a brother Keith Desmarais and his wife Mary of Charlestown. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren as well as numerous other loving relatives and friends. Visiting hours with be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street in Claremont on Tuesday June 14th from 3 to 5 pm. A celebration of her life will follow at the family’s home on 7 Cornell Street in Claremont.
