Evelyn (Garneau) Wilson passed away peacefully at Sullivan County Health Care in Unity, NH, on Sunday, December 12th, following a long struggle with dementia.
Evelyn was a lifelong resident of Claremont. She graduated from St. Mary School, became a member of the Catholic Daughters at a young age, and worked at Valley Regional Hospital for most of her professional life. In 1956, she married Lawrence Wilson; they remained happily wed until his passing in 2014.
Evelyn is survived by three children – Michael Wilson, Patricia Witthaus and Thomas Wilson. She also leaves six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a sister, Carol Bodreau, all of Claremont. She was predeceased by a sister, Ellen Dahl of Rockland, MA and her parents, Mary (Doris) and Arthur Garneau of Claremont.
“Evie” was the anchor of her family and the life of every gathering. She was possessed with wit, grace, poise and compassion. Her greatest pleasure came during the holiday season, when her house filled with family and friends, and she became a one-woman catering company, with an admiral’s command of her kitchen. Doing for others gave her the greatest pleasure.
She loved collecting, from vintage tins to figurines, and car rides with her beloved Lawrence in the orange MGB convertible he gave her as a birthday present. Frequently, their destination was a church supper.
Calling hours for Evelyn will be held at Stringer Funeral Home on Sunday, January 2nd from 2-4 pm. A Catholic Mass will follow at St. Joseph’s Church on Monday, January 3rd at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sullivan County Health Care McConnell Unit, 5 Nursing Home Drive, Claremont, NH; a critical resource in our community that provided Evelyn with stellar care in her final years.
