Alston W. Barrett, 92 years old, of 384 Grout Hill Road, Acworth, NH, passed away at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, following injuries he sustained after being hit by a car as he was walking across Main St. in Saxton’s River VT. Born in Keene, NH, on May 6, 1925, he was the only child of Louis G. Barrett and Edna May Williams. He is survived by his domestic partner of 50 years, Mr. G. Kristian Fenderson and two step-sisters; Julie Barrett of Parker’s Prairie, MN, and Wendy Sundstrom of Charlestown, IN. He was beloved by, and considered by his partner’s three sisters and their children to be family. He served in the Navy Medical Corps in World War II following which he was a commercial fisherman on the Cranberry Isles, ME, and in management at the Hillsboro Club of Pompano Beach, FL, and the Waumbec Hotel in Jefferson, NH. Following his retirement he became very active in local affairs, including serving several terms as Selectman in Acworth, as County Commissioner of Sullivan County, NH, and most recently as the long term Chair of the Acworth, NH Trustees of Trust Funds, something he enjoyed greatly. His passions were the stewardship of his land, forests, and gardens of his Acworth property and he had a deep interest in the pre-Colonial cultural and physical history of NH. He was an intrepid world traveler whose journeys spanned many continents and decades and even led to a meeting with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India. In recent decades his many excursions with his partner were on horseback to the mountains of the American Southwest, Mexico, and Guatemala. A memorial service may be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, tax-exempt contributions in his memory may be made to Friends of Grout Hill Gardens, P.O. Box 188, Acworth, NH 03601, a 501-C3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of his and his partner’s gardens for the enjoyment and education of the public.
