Nicholas Skoby Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Burnham, ME, on June 16, 2017, surrounded by his family and friends.
Nick was born November 20, 1924, in Hanover NH. He was a Sargent in the Air Force and served as a tail gunner in World War II. He was a holder of the Air Medal for his service while stationed in India. He and his wife Mae lived in Portsmouth, NH, while he finished college at The University of NH, graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He then joined the US Air Force as 2nd Lt. and lived at Fort Walton in Florida during the Korean War. He and his family relocated to Claremont, NH, where he worked as an engineer at Bryant Grinder. They later moved to Essex, MA, where he worked at Shetland Inc. in Salem, MA, until they moved to Manchester, NH, where he worked for Kingston Warren Corp of Newfields, NH. Nick enjoyed fishing with family and friends, cooking, hunting, reading, and building things in his workshop. In the early married years, Nick was involved in church activities and cub scouts. Nick and Mae raised two sons and four daughters. Their family later grew with the addition of sons/daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces. The Skoby home was always filled with children and pets; and the sounds of laughter and song.
Nick and Mae spent many years at their camp on Lake Winnecook in Maine and were delighted to finally move to Maine to retire among their friends around the lake. Nick taught his children the important things in life: be kind to all; if something is broken, fix it; stay busy; there is always room for one more; never give up, no matter the odds; and finally if all else fails, fish!
Nick was predeceased by his wife Mae and son Mike, as well as his parents, brothers and sisters. He is survived by his children and their spouses; Ken Skoby; Nancy Tkachuk and husband Dave of Burnham, ME, Karol Skoby of Rockport ME; Mary Cowan Lundquist and her husband Jerry Lundquist of Hopkinton NH, Jan Skoby of Allenstown, NH, Diane Clarke McDonald and Patti Skoby.
