NEWPORT, NH–The Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a call at 4:34PM on Friday with the caller from Hale St. reporting black smoke from the 2nd floor from a house on Cottage St. Upon arrival, the 1st fire officer reported smoke from the eaves and 2nd floor with subject outside on the ground. Upgraded to 1st Alarm. Newport Fire-EMS loaded patient into the ambulance and subject was transport to New London Hospital.
Initial units arrived on scene at 6 Cottage St. at 4:36PM. Crews made entry with attack line in the front door of the building. Crews accessed 2nd floor to find closed bedroom door with heavy charring around doorway. Fire was knocked down with Water Can (APW). Hand lines were brought to 2nd floor to fire room for overhaul from extensive damage in fire room. Ventilation was established. Companies checked for extension. Responding to the scene were Newport Police Department, Sunapee, New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office. Covering the Newport Fire Station was the Lempster Fire Department.
The fire was deemed under control at 5:03PM. All fire apparatus were clear at 6:17PM. Fire personnel and Newport Police with New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office remained on scene as of 8:00PM. New London Ambulance Services Emergency transferred the patient to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
A joint investigation is being conducted by the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office, Newport Fire-EMS and Newport Police Department members. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
