Alberta “Betty” Lewko McGrath, 99, died Sept. 12, 2018, at Sullivan County Health Care in Unity after a brief illness.
A native and nearly lifelong resident of Claremont, NH, she was born July 27, 1919, the fifth child and only daughter of Florian and Constance (Krupski) Lewko, Sr. She lived in Claremont until World War II, when she moved to Springfield, MA, to work at the nearby American Bosch factory. After the war, she moved to Stamford, CT, to work at Stamford Hall, a private sanitarium. It was in Connecticut that she met her husband George McGrath, whom she married on Oct. 7, 1949. They returned to Claremont the following year and enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage until his death in 2008.
She worked for 13 years as a switchboard operator at Claremont General Hospital (now Valley Regional) before retiring in 1971. She was a communicant of St Joseph Church and a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
She was an excellent cook and a meticulous housekeeper. Her keen sense of humor, her wit, and her appreciation of the beauties of nature stayed with her until the end of her life. Her devotion to her family, her courage and her determination were an inspiration to those who knew her.
Family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Thomas Sauer of Farmington; two grandchildren, Nicholas Sauer of Farmington, and Nora Sauer and fiancé Zachary Babb of Fairfield, Maine; several nieces and nephews and their children; and a cousin. Her six brothers, Albin, Alexander, Florian, Frank, William, and Anthony and their wives predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St., on Friday morning, Sept. 21st at 11 AM. Visiting hours will held from 10 to 11 prior to the service. Committal prayers will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the activities fund at Sullivan County Health Care.
