NEWPORT, NH–The Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center received a call at 9:47AM today, Tuesday, from on duty Police Officer reporting heavy black smoke in the area of Bradford Rd. and Sunshine Court. While en route dispatch received additional reports of building fire, upgraded to 1st Alarm to bring tankers into the scene. Upon arrival had heavy smoke and fire coming from back left side of the building and coming from the eves.
Initial units arrived on scene at 417 Bradford Rd. at 9:52AM. Crews made entry with attack line to the backside of the building; due to the heavy fire load and advancement, interior crews withdrew from the building. Exterior Operations were established. Heavy fire load in the attic caused for extensive fire in the attic. Newport Fire-EMS received assistance from mutual aid towns. Responding to the scene were Newport Police Department, Sunapee, Croydon, Goshen, Claremont, New London Fire Departments. Covering the Newport Fire Station were the Lempster and Newbury Fire Departments.
Exterior crews were able to knock fire down. Fire had vented through the roof. Crews made entry into the building for extinguishment. Extensive overhaul was required for several hot spots in hard to reach places in the attic area. The fire was deemed under control at 11:18AM. The residence was released to the building owner. All fire personnel were clear at 13:00PM. Two adults and four children were displaced. Building is unlivable; it is owned by Andrea and Arnulfo Urista.
A joint investigation was conducted by Newport Fire-EMS and Newport Police department members. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and if anyone with further information and/or questions is asked to contact Fire Chief Wayne Conroy at 863-1416.
