CLAREMONT, NH—The Claremont School District and taxpayers can breathe a little easier; the district and the IRS have resolved the issue of the district’s failure regarding filling out required paperwork related to health insurance coverage; the failure had garnered the district a potential $320,000 fine from the IRS, it was learned earlier this year.
However, in a letter dated Aug. 5, provided by Superintendent Mike Tempesta, the IRS wrote:
“Dear CLAREMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT:
We received your information in response to our inquiry dated April 1, 2019. Your information resolved our inquiry and you don’t need to do anything more at this time….”
The district provided the original delinquent information returns for the 2016 tax year, which the IRS processed.
The original letter from IRS officials had informed the district that it was looking at a $160,000 fine for failing the filing requirements, and an additional $160,000 for failing to provide full-time district employees with specific forms required by the ACA.
The district, as noted in the August letter, provided the two necessary forms, one called the Transmittal of Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage Information Returns and the other, for Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage.
“This is indeed great news,” Claremont School Board Chair Frank Sprague told the e-Ticker News. “The administration and school boards (Unity and Claremont) are looking at restructuring options at SAU 6 to ensure things like this never happen again.”
