CLAREMONT, NH–The Fiske Free library in Claremont was insanely busy on Monday, August 21st, as eclipse fever took over. “From the time we opened at 9:00 a.m., people flooded in looking for eclipse glasses which they heard that we were handing out,” said Children’s Librarian Marta Smith. “At that point we were worried about having enough for the people coming to our eclipse program at 1:00PM, so we kept 100 pairs for the program and handed out the rest until they ran out at about 11:00 a.m. After that we told people to show up for the program and we would have more glasses to hand out. We had a great program featuring Adds Bodkin presenting “Tales of the Eclipse”; he is a wonderful storyteller and many people who remembered seeing him here when they were children brought their own youngsters to see him. We began to panic a bit when we saw the number of people lining up outside for the program and to see the eclipse.” Smith said it “was amazing how good natured everyone was about the glasses shortage, however. We started handing them out and limiting it to one pair per family and still we ran out, everyone was willing to share so it all turned out fine.” Smith said that they had approximately 300 people attending the program and viewing. “Many children came from two of the local summer camps and many families were there as well. All in all, it was a very successful day, a perfect finale to a very successful Summer Reading Program!”
While it may have been only a partial eclipse in New Hampshire, clearly the program at the Fiske was a “total” success as science, fun and community combined for a memorable day.
