Roland R. LaPointe, 92, of Taylors, SC, died on Thursday (November 4, 2021) at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC, following a brief illness.
He was born in Claremont, NH, on March 2, 1929, the son of William F. LaPointe and Antoinette (Descoteau) LaPointe and had been a longtime Claremont resident prior to moving to SC. Roland worked at Joy Manufacturing Company in Claremont where he completed a 5 year engineering program. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and later attended Maryknoll Seminary. He was employed as a Senior Project Engineer for 35 years by Joy Manufacturing Company, Coal & Hard Rock Division. He then worked for Fluid Controls in Easley, SC for 12 years in the Hydraulics Division. He held several US Patent Awards in Hard Rock & Coal Disciplines and US Patents on hydraulic golf course equipment. Roland received a 1st prize for his article on hydraulics, published in 1978. Roland served on the Claremont City Council as assistant mayor and Ward 1 counselor, School Board Chairman, Claremont Supervisory Union #6, Ward 1 Representative to the State Legislature and the Jr. Chamber of Commerce. Roland loved the game of golf, and continued to play up to his death.
Members of his family include a son, Scott W. LaPointe and his wife, Deirdre, of Barrington, NH; two daughters, Susan E. LaPointe of Port Charlotte, TX; Marilyn J. Slater and her husband, Keith, of Pembroke, NH; six grandchildren, Jordan LaPointe, Kolten, Brittney, and Aaron Slater, Amanda Mouchet and Elizabeth Bobinski as well as three great granddaughters, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Muriel (Wallace) LaPointe; his second wife, Evelyn (Waugh) LaPointe; a daughter, Nancy A. LaPointe; a brother George LaPointe; a sister Rita Michaud;, and daughter-in-law Jennifer Hall LaPointe.
There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday (November 16) at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Shawn M. Therrien, pastor, officiating. Committal will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
