The Newport Police Department has reported the arrest of Ryan Gobin, age 18, of Newport, NH. This arrest comes after the police received reports of a male subject allegedly going through cars in the area of the Newport Village Apartments on Whipple Road yesterday, June 27th, at approximately 8:30 p.m. While in the area conducting that investigation and searching for the suspect, officers were called to an occupied residence a short distance away on Sunapee Street where a male subject was interrupted allegedly attempting to gain entry into an occupied residence. The suspect fled on foot from that residence and while officers were tracking the suspect and conducting that investigation, another active burglary was reported a short distance away to the Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center. Officers were dispatched just down the road to Pinnacle Bait and Tackle, said authorities. Within seconds of that call, Newport Police officers and officers from the New Hampshire State Police were on scene and located a subject matching the caller’s description as well as the previous descriptions from earlier reports. Upon the arrival of the officers, the subject started to flee from the closed business, said the police department. That subject was taken into custody after a brief struggle with the responding officers; law enforcement identified the suspect as Gobin. Evidence allegedly found on Gobin link him to the reports received earlier in the evening, said the police.
Gobin was transported to the Newport Police Department and was in the process of being booked by Officer Dakota Titorenko when Gobin allegedly attacked him. After a brief altercation, Gobin was restrained. Titorenko reported minor injuries and was treated by the Newport Ambulance Service; he returned to duty a short time later.
“The investigation remains very active at this time with evidence and information indicating that there are additional burglary locations that may be linked to Gobin,” said Newport Police Chief James Burroughs.
Gobin, who was already out on bail pending unrelated charges, was held without bail and was transported to the Sullivan County House of Corrections.
Gobin was arraigned today and was charged with the following crimes: Attempted Burglary, Class B Felony Resisting Arrest/Detention, Class A Misdemeanor Simple Assault, Class A Misdemeanor Second Degree Assault, Class B Felony Theft by Unauthorized taking, Class A Felony Breach of Bail, X2, Class A Misdemeanors
Gobin’s previous bail order was revoked and he is currently being held without bail. He will next appear in Newport’s 5th Circuit Court on July 5th at 2:00 p.m. for a probable cause hearing. At this time the Newport Police Department investigation continues and additional charges are expected, said the authorities. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in and around Whipple Road, Sunapee Street or the surrounding areas is encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department. Additionally, the investigation also includes criminal activity in and around the Birchwood Grove area of town, specifically the Alexander Ave. and Willow Road areas.
“Evidence suggests that the criminal activity from both areas is connected and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department,” said authorities.
Burroughs thanked the residents who “immediately called and reported the suspicious activity last night.” He said that it was the “real time calls” that led to the quick arrest of a suspect. He also thanked Troopers from Troop C of the NHSP who assisted with the case. Anyone with information about these, or any other crimes, is encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department at 863-3232.
