Leona M. (LaPlante) Denis died on Dec. 5, 2016, at Summercrest in Newport, NH. She was 96 years old, and the daughter of Oscar and Adelia LaPlante. She attended St. Mary’s School and was a lifelong resident of Claremont, NH.
Following World War II, she met and married George L. Denis and remained a homemaker as she brought up her two children. However, she was a homemaker who could do almost anything around the home from simple carpentry, yardwork, wallpapering, painting and maintaining a large garden. She knit and sewed beautifully, and made a great many items for her family, as well as donating to local charities. To Leona, having a family around her was very important as she hosted and cooked for a great many extended family gatherings at her home throughout the years. Her passion was her immediate family, especially her two grandchildren, Elise and Adam, as well as her great grand-children, Abigail and Madeline. She was very active and involved in her grandchildren’s lives, and was a very special “Memere”.
Leona was a caring and compassionate person who would often think of others and help them in their time of need. She was especially known for her wonderful baked goods as she gave them away to many people, from those who were sick and homebound, or to those business contacts in the local community. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church where she volunteered for many years. She was also a member of the St. Anne’s Society, the Catholic Daughters, and the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.
Leona was pre-deceased by her husband, George L. Denis; her son, Brian Denis; her parents, Oscar and Adelia LaPlante, and her brothers: Harry, Leo, Wilfred, Arthur, Ernest, Edward and William LaPlante, and sisters, Eva LaPlante, Alice (LaPlante) Giguere, and Diana (Laplante) Webb.
She is survived by her daughter Doreen (Denis) Kusselow and her husband Charles, her grandchildren Elise (Kusselow) Buckley and her husband Kevin, and Adam Kusselow; great grandchildren, Abigail and Madeline Buckley. She is also survived by her two brothers, Henry and Rene LaPlante and his wife Darlene. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Leona was a loving and kind gentle person who anyone could go to for a listening ear. She was much loved and will be deeply missed.
