Francis E. Sutherland, age 98, of Charlestown, NH, died on October 3, 2016.
He was the son of the late Herbert and Elsie Sutherland. He was born in Chesterfield, MA, on May 25, 1918. He graduated from agricultural school and was a farmer all his life. He married Helen Richardson May 27, 1938. He managed large dairy farms in Virginia and Connecticut before buying his own in Alstead, NH. In later years he started market gardening and was one of the first to participate in the Farmers Market in Keene, NH. He was also known for his excellent maple syrup products. After his wife passed away, he moved to Charlestown, NH, where he still gardened, taking great pride in his flowers and many hanging potted plants. He was known in his neighborhood as the “cookie man”, having baked dozens of cookies at a time and donating them to area bake sales and giving them to friends and neighbors. He is survived by his daughter Marjorie Perkins of Wilmington, NC, daughter Christine Fields of Claremont, NH, son F. Robert of Charlestown, NH, seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, a sister Phyllis Grimm of Palmyra, PA, and several nieces and nephews. The Stringer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, with no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
