NEWPORT, NH–The Newport Police Department Emergency Communications Center received several 911 calls at 10:56 A.M. Dec. 20, advising that there had been a motor vehicle collision on North Main Street at the intersection of Belknap Ave. According to a statement released by Newport Police James C. Burroughs Thursday afternoon, it was reported that “one vehicle had rolled over and was on its side. The Newport Police, Fire Rescue and the Newport Ambulance service were dispatched to the scene. At the scene and prior to the arrival of emergency responders, it was discovered that there was a person [who] was ejected and trapped under the rolled over vehicle. Several people were able to move the vehicle off the trapped subject as first responders were arriving. First responders found the previously trapped female not to have a pulse, and CPR was initiated. Subsequently, she was transported from the scene by the Newport Ambulance Service to Valley Regional Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.”
She was a passenger in her 2007 Subaru Forrester which was operated by her son: Benjamin Schendler, age 19, Brooklyn, NY.
Benjamin Schendler sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
Striking the Schendler’s vehicle was a 2015 GMC Yukon which was operated by: Betty Sipple, age 72, Acworth, NH. Sipple and her passenger, Jane Stickney, age 67, Unity, NH, sustained minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene by the Newport Ambulance Service, reported Burroughs.
Burroughs stated that, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that the Schendler’s vehicle failed to yield before coming off from Park Street and entering the North Main Street intersection where it was struck by the Sipple vehicle which was traveling North on North Main Street.”
The South bound lane of North Main Street was closed for nearly two hours while the accident scene was investigated and the vehicles removed.
The collision remains under investigation by the Newport Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team, said Burroughs.
