Jean Davis Lear, 84, died on October 16, 2017, at Valley Regional Hospital.
She was the only child born to Wendell and Marjorie (Thompson) Davis. Jean graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, ME in 1950 and from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1954.
On September 4, 1954, she married Robert C. Lear in Readfield Depot, ME. While her husband was serving in the US Air Force during the mid-1960’s, Jean was the Family Service Coordinator at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, helping military family members adjust to sometimes drastic life changes. After relocating to Claremont in 1968, she worked as Branch Secretary for the General Adjustment Bureau in Claremont for 20 years.
Jean volunteered as a tutor for the Adult Learning Program in Claremont for many years and served as a trustee for the Fiske Free Library from 1997 to 2004 and as treasurer for the Friends of Fiske Free Library from 2004 to 2014.
Even a brief summary of her life reveals Jean took the greatest joy from devoting herself to helping others and always doing her best to bring some measure of happiness into any life she touched. Always challenging others with her quick wit and sense of humor, Jean was never without a book in hand, a puzzle to solve, or a craft to complete.
Jean is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert; her two sons, Richard and Thomas and five grandchildren, Charles E. Lear II, Courtney (Eric) Samuelu, Caroline Lear, Cathleen Lear and Christina Lear.
She was predeceased by her parents and half-sister, Nancy (Jon) Bottiglieri.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Fiske Free Library, 108 Broad Street, Claremont, NH 03743.
