Dorothy Hazel MacConnell Hamel, 96, of Yale Street in Claremont, NH, died Thursday morning, February 14, 2019, at Valley Regional Hospital.
She was born in Croyden, NH, on March 7, 1922, the daughter of Herbert G. and Georgia E. (Phelps) Leavitt, and had resided in Claremont since 1942.
She was a graduate of Towle High School in 1939.
She worked at the International and Kimel Shoe Companies in Claremont and Newport, mostly as a shoe cutter for several years. Her greatest love of work was a nursery school teacher at the First Baptist Church for eleven years and retired in 1982.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and worked with the kindergarten children for 25 years and was with the praise and worship team.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dean MacConnell in June 27, 1988, and her second husband, Leo Hamel in October 23, 2011, three brothers; Merton, Albert, and Walter and an infant son.
The surviving family includes one son, Douglas MacConnell and his wife, Susan of Claremont; four grandchildren, Kyle Jarvis, Nicole MacConnell, Tyler MacConnell and Danielle Stevens; two brothers, Arthur C. Leavitt of Newport, NH, Herbert G. Leavitt of Charlestown, and sister, Margaret Quigley of Agawam MA, also nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street on Monday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. Funeral services will be held at Grace River on Main Street in Claremont on Tuesday at 11 AM. Burial will follow privately for immediate family only at Mt View Cemetery.
